Pune Traffic News: Daily traffic in Pune has become a real struggle for many people. Long jams, signal stops, and crowded roads often turn short trips into long ones. Now, the city may finally have a solution. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has directed officials to move quickly on two major tunnel projects. These tunnels aim to reduce travel time and make daily commutes easier.
Pune has seen a huge rise in the number of vehicles over the years. By 2023–24, the total number of registered vehicles has crossed 7.2 million. Every year, about 300,000 new vehicles are added. This has put heavy pressure on roads in areas like Kothrud, Pashan, Sinhagad Road, Swargate, and Katraj. Because of this, even a 10-kilometer trip can take up to an hour during peak time.
Pashan to Kothrud Tunnel: A Faster Route Across the Hills
Right now, people traveling from Pashan to Kothrud mostly depend on Chandni Chowk or Senapati Bapat Road. These routes have many signals and intersections, which slow things down. The proposed tunnel will be around 3 kilometers long and pass under Panchwati Hill. It will directly connect Pashan Road, Panchwati Road, and Paud Road. Once completed, the journey could take just 10 to 15 minutes instead of up to an hour.
Hingne to Dhankawadi Tunnel: No More Long Detours
Another key project is the tunnel between Hingne and Dhankawadi. At present, Taljai Hill blocks a direct route between these areas. This forces drivers to go via Swargate or Katraj, which takes 40 to 50 minutes. The new tunnel, about 2.4 kilometers long, will pass under the hill and offer a direct link. Travel time could drop to just 5 to 10 minutes.
What This Means for Residents
These tunnels are expected to make a big difference in daily life. Roads like Sinhagad Road, Satara Road, and areas around Swargate could see less traffic. People may spend less time stuck in jams and more time at home or work. It could also help save fuel and reduce stress during travel.
At the same time, there are important questions. Large tunnel projects can affect the environment, especially hills and green areas. People may also wonder about safety and how long construction will take. These are issues the authorities will need to address clearly.
Right now, both projects are in the planning stage. The municipal corporation is working on designs and approvals. Actual construction may take some time to begin. Until then, citizens will need to stay patient.
If everything goes as planned, these tunnels could change how people travel across Pune. Shorter routes and faster journeys may soon become a reality for the city
